Mobile SEO – It’s Not “One Web” When It Comes to Search

Monday, November 24th, 2008

How well does your brand show up when it’s searched via mobile? If you think it’s the same as how it ranks on desktop browsers, think again.

It’s not “one web” when it comes to mobile search. Even Google returns different results to a mobile device than it does to your desktop. All the mobile search engines look for different meta-data than is normally included on a website. So what can be done?

Before you start a mobile SEO project, you need to consider why someone is using their mobile device to search you out. What are the “triggers” for you or your brand? What sort of words will searchers type in to their phones to find out more about you?

Generally, mobile searches are spontaneous acts of immediacy – driven by our overwhelming need to know answers on the spot. Maybe someone is on their way to meet you and wants to run a quick check on you. Maybe they want to look up your contact details. Maybe they met you briefly, overheard you talking about a common business interest, but only remember a few key terms – and they want to find your brand.
Once you are clear on what “triggers” you want to own, then the trick is optimizing your mobile search results to guarantee those triggers return you at the top of the list (few people read more than the top five search results).

Since almost no one has realized the importance of optimizing their sites for mobile search yet, now is the time to get out in front and take an early lead – first mover advantage is back.
